Mark

Mark is a cashier at Ocean State Job Lot. So committed to his long bangs I never got to see his eyes but I was drawn to how he stood out like a colorful jelly bean in a bowl full of must have deals. When I took this photo of him he had just graduated from school and told me he loved to sew. He makes his own “Blow Out” jackets that he wears to heavy metal concerts. Not wanting to look like a middle aged woman unaware of the latest niche music scene, I made a mental note to research “Blow Out”.

Later that night Google offered up many definition of what this could mean. From the straightening of hair to explosive bowel movements, to name just two, but no where did I find anything pointing to a music style. There was a band called Blow Out but it is not very metal, like wise there is a movie with the same name, its beautiful classical soundtrack however suggesting this is not what he was alluding to. Perhaps then, this Blow Out is too obscure to appear on big brother and any merch a fan wants to wear they have to make themselves. We might never know the true meaning of Blow Out but on my quest to find it I have read things that I can never unlearn! Thanks to urbandictionary.com I am now very knowledgeable in more fecal metaphors than I knew existed. I have learnt new sexual expressions and in one case the meaning of an obscure painful thing that happens to your ear when you try to stretch the lobe. Most of them make me thank god I am no longer young and fun and seem to hold little relevance to my world now. There was however one meaning that did make me smile, something that I am often accused of, the example of how to use the word perfectly fitting to how I operate around most events I go to.

“Blow Out.”

Noun; person who withdraws from social activities in an untimely manner.

Example

"Are you going to bed? You're such a blowout!”

Good night. X
