Aya Kanai- Editor-in-chief Marie Claire magazine

corona Diaries

Aya you were recently made Editor in Chief of Marie Claire magazine. How has the business of fashion changed in these few short weeks?

The fashion industry has been upended by the global health crisis. It represents jobs in so many different countries around the world and to have the whole industry come to a screeching halt as many industries have has been shocking to watch.

What are you doing to try and ensure another issue gets published? Have you had to come up with new creative ways to get stories produced?

Several of our projects have been redirected but our problems are truly irrelevant compared to the suffering that's happening in the world. I have always lived with gratitude that I get to work in a creative industry everyday. Now that we are finding new solutions for how to make our stories, it's a creative challenge that I welcome.

Where are you social isolating and with whom? How is it being home with them all the time?!

I am home with my husband and daughter in New York. Everyday is an adventure.  I revealed my first cover of Marie Claire on the same day that my two year old used a potty for the first time. LOL, that was a good day.

Do you have a routine you try to stick to?

I have a new WFH routine. I get up at 5:30 and do "20/20/20" which is 20 minutes of yoga, 20 minutes of meditation and 20 minutes of reading before I touch my phone.

Do you get dressed in the morning or stay in your PJ’s?

I get dressed from the waist up at least ;)  I am on video calls most of the day.

Have you found any silver linings?

Time with my daughter and husband has been so special. Each day I make her breakfast and we get ready for the day. I feel lucky to start the day playing with my daughter.

Using the color chart below please tell me in general what colors you are feeling. It can be a whole rainbow if you want or just one…!  And please add any colors with feelings that have not been included.
